Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About Guide SunTan
1. Who is Guide SunTan?
Guide SunTan is a licensed birding guide based in Chiang Dao, Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.
With years of field experience, I specialize in private birding tours, bird photography experiences, and customized birdwatching itineraries throughout Northern Thailand. Most weeks, I spend four to five days in the field monitoring bird activity, seasonal changes, and habitat conditions to provide guests with the best possible birding experience.
2. Why choose Guide SunTan?
Choosing a local birding guide is about much more than identifying birds.
Because I spend most of my time in the field, I continually monitor seasonal movements, breeding activity, migration timing, weather, and habitat conditions. This allows every tour to be adapted to current conditions rather than following a fixed itinerary.
My goal is to provide an enjoyable, ethical, and personalized birding experience for every guest.
3. Why does Guide SunTan have two websites?
Guide SunTan operates two separate websites to clearly organize different services.
chiangdaohut.com is the official website of Chiang Dao Hut, providing accommodation, tour services, and general travel information for Chiang Dao.
ichiangdao.com is my personal website dedicated to birding in Northern Thailand. It focuses on birdwatching tours, bird photography, field updates, and educational information based on my own experience as a licensed birding guide.
This separation makes it easier for visitors to find the information most relevant to their interests.
Birding Tours
4. Do I only guide birding tours in Chiang Dao?

Although Chiang Dao is my main base, I regularly guide birding tours throughout Northern Thailand, including:
-
Chiang Dao
-
Doi Inthanon National Park
-
Doi Ang Khang
-
Doi Lang West
-
Doi Lang East
-
Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park
-
Doi Kham Fa
Tour itineraries are customized according to your travel dates, target birds, and available time.
5. Can beginners join your birding tours?
Absolutely.
Many of my guests are completely new to birdwatching. I adjust the pace of each tour to match your experience and interests, making birding enjoyable for both beginners and experienced birders.
6. Do you provide binoculars?
Yes.
Binoculars are available for guests who do not have their own equipment.
7. Can I request target bird species?
Yes.
Before your tour, you are welcome to share your target species. I will recommend suitable destinations and seasons based on current field conditions.
However, birds are wild animals, so no guide can guarantee any particular species.
8. What is the best time for birding in Northern Thailand?
Birding is rewarding throughout the year, but different seasons offer different opportunities.
The best time depends on your interests, whether you are looking for resident birds, migratory species, breeding behavior, or bird photography.
I am happy to recommend the best travel period based on your target species.
9. Why are your itineraries flexible?
Nature changes every day.
Bird activity depends on weather, breeding cycles, food availability, and seasonal movements. Rather than following a fixed schedule, I adjust each itinerary according to current conditions to maximize your birding opportunities.
Bird Photography
10. Do you offer bird photography tours?
Yes.
I provide bird photography experiences throughout Northern Thailand for photographers of all experience levels.
My focus is on ethical bird photography in natural habitats while minimizing disturbance to wildlife.
11. Can beginners join bird photography tours?
Certainly.
Whether you use a professional camera or simply enjoy photographing wildlife, I will recommend suitable locations and provide guidance throughout the tour.
12. Do you use bird hides?
Yes, when appropriate.
Depending on the season and bird activity, bird hides may be available for selected photography opportunities. Availability changes throughout the year.
Booking & Payment
13. Why is a deposit required?
A deposit confirms your booking and reserves your guide, transportation, and tour arrangements.
It also helps prevent last-minute cancellations and allows sufficient time to prepare a personalized itinerary.
The deposit is deducted from the total tour price.
14. Can I customize my itinerary?
Yes.
All tours are private and can be customized according to your interests, available time, fitness level, and target bird species.
15. What happens if weather conditions change?
Weather can affect bird activity and accessibility.
If conditions change, I may adjust the itinerary or birding locations to provide the best possible experience while prioritizing safety.
